Weekend Bags

Summer inevitably brings on spontaneous trips that don’t involve a lot of planning.  They’re exciting and a great way to reconnect to that thrilling feeling that came during childhood in between School years.  Whether it’s a night away at a local hotel offering a great deal or an impromptu decision to drive a couple hours along the coast to a great vacation spot, I like to be able to get out of the house within an hour before the idea of actually doing it fades.  Some of my favorite daytime purses are actually larger weekend bags that are perfect for these occasions.  Big enough to fit the essentials for a different climate, but small enough so that it is easy to carry.

Printed Shorts

Integrating new colors and prints into your wardrobe will maximize the use of everyday basics.  I’m trying to be really conscious of buying things I don’t have anything like in order to mix up my looks.  With Summer right around the corner, a great way to create easy outfits that are fun, but still allow you to run around, is to layer your staples on top (that you already have) – T’s, blazers, lightweight sweaters, and invest in some printed shorts.

Shorts have a bad rap because they can be a disaster if you buy the wrong type for your body.  Know that your shorts should hit just below the largest part of your thigh.  Also, make sure they are not too small (looks all kinds of wrong) AND not too big (usually looks really sloppy).  When all else fails (even though I love wearing shorts with strappy, colorful sandals) – wear them with a wedge or some type of comfortable heel – it instantly takes 5 lbs off.

That being said, it’s a great way to mix up solid colors and allows you to use a lot of pieces you probably already have.

Top It Off

One of my New Year’s Resolutions was -  If I’m going to buy something, make it totally different than anything I have in my closet.  It’s so easy to know you look good in something and continually buy similar styles.  Then, you become bored with wearing the same thing everyday and although your bank statement proves otherwise, you feel like you have nothing to wear.

I’ve been watching a lot of VH1′s House of ConsignmentCorri McFadden, the owner and founder of eDrop-Off (luxury consignment business) makes a really good point when she tells her clients to never buy something in two or more colors.  Although I have certainly broken this rule and still think for layering basics like T’s and tanks it’s ok, she makes a good point.  You want to create versatility in your wardrobe and bring in things that will completely shake up your outfits.

Next time you try something on or are ready to go to the register, think about whether you have a similar style in shape or color before you buy.  Instead, bring in something new that will allow you to accomplish more looks.  Maximize what you have!  People will notice.

Because I have so many jeans and wear them all the time, I like to buy tops as an easy way to get different looks.

Here are tops in colors and prints that would really shake up what I already own…

Trends for Every Body

So much of pulling off a trend (or any article of clothing for that matter) is being real about your proportions.  How something fits or drapes on your body is the main factor in how it will appear.  Because clothes aren’t custom made for you, don’t be too discouraged if you’re having trouble fitting into one particular size – and don’t assume just because you are a certain size in one brand, you are the same in all others.

I still believe that any (ok I guess most) looks can be achieved by everyone, but you might have to get creative and adapt the season’s trends to your body.  For instance, if you are loving the nautical bold stripes that are still everywhere, but are concerned about them not be flattering, implement the idea into your beauty regime and paint a bold stripe on your nails or maybe integrate it into an accessory.

Tailoring can be your best friend here.  But, you can also make smart purchases that are geared towards maximizing your assets.  Knowing how to create illusions with your clothing will greatly benefit how you look.  Adapting any trend to your body is universally the same regardless of what piece you are trying to pull off.  Rules are made to be broken, but here are some guidelines to keep in mind…

Accomplish…

Do’s

Don’ts

Looking Taller/Thinner -Light weight clothing-Smaller prints-Vertical stripes

-V-neck tops

-Leave jackets open

-Long accessories like necklaces and scarves

-Heels

-POSTURE

-Low rise pants-Big belts-Cropped/Short pants

-Long jackets

-Tuck in your shirt

-Very oversized clothing

-Too many layers

-Finding the right undergarments

Looking Shorter/Curvier -Bold prints-Create lines/Define waistline-Fitted, tailored pieces

-Add layers/accessories to create shape

-Overly tight clothing-Baggy clothing-Find the right undergarments

Below, I broke down some of my favorite trends that are everywhere right now.  Because I can’t go over every shape/size combination (there’s a million of them!), try to combine the above methods to make them work or email me at taylorbraun@mac.com for specific direction on how to make a certain trend work for you.  Remember, this is supposed to be fun, not frustrating!  :)

Tech Accessories

I will never forget my first cell phone.  I had to have the rectangular Nokia (you know, the one with Snake on it) and still think back with pride realizing how fast of a texter I was even with 3 letters on each button.  I obsessed with changing the covers to show off different colors and prints in an effort to make a rather bulky looking device “cute”.  Things have certainly come far since then; sometimes it feels like I can’t even go a month without a new tech accessory catching my eye, which makes personalizing these things (which we spend so much time on!) fun, as well as reflect our personal style.

I recently purchased a new mouse pad from Freshly Picked ($35) and an iPhone case from J Crew ($25) to spruce up my gadget’s looks for Spring.  Sometimes it’s nice to treat yourself to something like this because they’ve become as much of a part of our look as our shoes or handbag!
