Weekend Bags

Summer inevitably brings on spontaneous trips that don’t involve a lot of planning.  They’re exciting and a great way to reconnect to that thrilling feeling that came during childhood in between School years.  Whether it’s a night away at a local hotel offering a great deal or an impromptu decision to drive a couple hours along the coast to a great vacation spot, I like to be able to get out of the house within an hour before the idea of actually doing it fades.  Some of my favorite daytime purses are actually larger weekend bags that are perfect for these occasions.  Big enough to fit the essentials for a different climate, but small enough so that it is easy to carry.

Summer Skirts

I’ve mentioned before that Summer dressing, to me, should be easy and effortless, but still polished.  There’s nothing better than being able to pair a great pair of pants or a bright silk skirt with your favorite tee or tank top.  It’s the perfect balance of appearing casual, yet like you still care about your appearance.

Lately I’ve been stocking up on skirts of different lengths in preparation for warm months.  I’m going for bold colors, interesting prints and fun hemlines to wear with my best simple solid colored tanks, layered with denim shirts or a light sweater.

Sunglasses!

Ah, my favorite accessory.  I love getting dressed up and have a pretty regular makeup routine, but there are days (especially on weekends) where I just have no energy to go beyond moisturizing.  At these moments, sunglasses are literally my saving grace.  Not only do they accessorize a simple look, but lets be real – they cover half your face.  Win!

I like to have a nice pair on hand that are reliable, while also protecting me from the Sun (ok… that’s just my excuse for spending over $100) but I also like to buy some novelty pairs that add fun and let me test out trendy eyewear without regretting it 5 minutes later.  I recently bought Fred Flare’s Red Heart Shaped Sunglasses for $14 and get complimented on them all the time.

Flat Out Necessary

My feet are distorted.  The reasons for this are twofold.  One, because I have an ongoing (and overwhelming) fear of asking for my actual shoe size and admit I have bought a size that isn’t right out of pure embarrassment.  I am… *taking a breath*… a size 10 (…and a half… ok sometimes – seriously only sometimes – 11, if the shoe is cut weird).

I’ve spent many trips to the Mall trying on 10’s and have mastered the act of, “OMG this is so weird!  This 10 doesn’t fit.  ALL my other shoes are 10’s… this line must be really small”.  Yes, the sales people see right through it, but it’s just like ordering two entrees from room service while alone on a work trip and making sure to ask for TWO sets of silverware… you know, for your friend that’s meeting up with you.  Sometimes I even through in an extra detail like “OH and can you make sure there’s no basil… my friend is really allergic to basil”, just to sound convincing.  #Problems

The other reason, however, is that I really do love heels and even if I mentally prepare myself to hear “YOU ARE SO TALL” from every person I run into while wearing them (remember I’m 5’10”), I have definitely been stuck one two many times spending hours in painful pumps.

That being said, I am constantly scavenging to find cute flats.  I’m all about boots in the fall and winter, but as the Summer gets closer, I find myself looking for fun alternatives to pair with fresh looks that won’t be boring.  And, even though I’m mostly style over comfort, c’mon… my ankle once swelled up twice its size in Vegas because I was wearing 5″ heels all day.  I was 100% sober and I will never get the man’s voice out of my head saying, “DUDE, that girl is SO drunk!” as he watched me wabble to my room (not even a little bit ok in the first place and also breaks my cardinal rule to not wear heels over 3″ during daylight to be sure I won’t be mistaken as a transvestite).

Tech Accessories

I will never forget my first cell phone.  I had to have the rectangular Nokia (you know, the one with Snake on it) and still think back with pride realizing how fast of a texter I was even with 3 letters on each button.  I obsessed with changing the covers to show off different colors and prints in an effort to make a rather bulky looking device “cute”.  Things have certainly come far since then; sometimes it feels like I can’t even go a month without a new tech accessory catching my eye, which makes personalizing these things (which we spend so much time on!) fun, as well as reflect our personal style.

I recently purchased a new mouse pad from Freshly Picked ($35) and an iPhone case from J Crew ($25) to spruce up my gadget’s looks for Spring.  Sometimes it’s nice to treat yourself to something like this because they’ve become as much of a part of our look as our shoes or handbag!
